Building Community Strength Through Green Innovation
Wellsprings for Women’s Climate Resilience Project is a pioneering, community-led initiative that empowers multicultural women in Melbourne’s southeast to co-design and deliver locally relevant adaptations to a changing climate. At its heart lies the Grow Green Community Garden in Noble Park. A project that was co-designed and led by community. Grow Green is a vibrant demonstration of both physical adaptation through green infrastructure and biodiversity enhancement, and social adaptation by strengthening connections, wellbeing and leadership among women who face cultural, economic or political barriers.
How It Works
Co-Design and Capacity Building
The project began with a co-design process involving a group of local women from migrant and refugee backgrounds. Through workshops on climate change, public speaking, and leadership, they shaped the vision of the garden and built the confidence to lead and inspire others in the community.
Hands-On Gardening and Learning
Participants and volunteers work together to plant, grow and maintain seasonal produce using sustainable gardening methods. The garden is a space for learning—about climate adaptation, food security, water conservation and community wellbeing—through doing.
Community Involvement and Leadership
The garden is open to new members and volunteers who want to learn, connect and contribute. Women are encouraged to lead working bees, share their skills, and guide visiting school and community groups. It’s not just a space to grow food, but to grow leaders, friendships and environmental awareness.
